Question about Gameboy Player
(too old to reply)

I'm curious as to how the different aspect ratio of the GBA is handled
with the GB Player. I'm aware that the options are 'squish and distort
the image' and 'letterbox the image', however I have a widescreen TV and I
was curious as to whether or not the player has support for 16:9 displays,
as that would make things a lot easier for me.

Anyone?

It doesn't have widescreen support. The GBA screen is not far off 4:3. It's
slightly wider but it's still closer to 4:3 than 16:9. You'll just need to
use 4:3 mode on your TV (what I do).

The GBP just puts a frame around the picture to maintain the correct aspect.
It has normal size and full-screen mode. When in full-screen mode the frame
is still there but it's quite tiny, so have pretty much a full screen of GBA
display.

A widescreen mode would only give you a slightly larger picture anyway,
assuming you kept the aspect correct.

The GBA screen is 16:9. It was designed to be 16:9, and, it still is 16:9.

It's about 60x40mm, which is 1.5:1 or 3:2
16:9 is 1.777:1
4:3 is 1.33:1

The GBA is closer to 4:3 than 16:9

The GBA just got called "widescreen" when it was released because it was
wider than the old GBC, which was almost square. It isn't the same aspect as
a WS TV though.

I'm not that great with eyeballing measurements, but I can tell that my
television is 'wider' (with respect to the width/height ratio) than the
screen on my Game Boy Advance. None of this, however, answers my original
question.

Does the Game Boy Player have a setting for formatting its image for a
16:9 television?

Yes a WS TV is wider than the GBA screen. I answered your original question
